Job insights from a Sourcing Manager

A sourcing manager is responsible for acquiring the goods and services their organisation requires to do business. We spoke to a successful sourcing manager about what their job entails, and how they got where they are today.

What do you do in a typical day as a sourcing manager?

In a nutshell, I find the right supplier at the right price and quality. It's a challenge, but a really rewarding one.

A typical day would entail spend analysis, gathering procurement data, contract negotiation, obtaining new product and service information through supplier relationships and market analysis, and monitoring the effectiveness of our current supply base. I'm also responsible for managing the sourcing team's spend profile and savings targets, and relaying projections to stakeholders.

What previous roles have you held?

I started out as a purchasing assistant, and also worked for several years as a purchasing manager before taking an interim role in sourcing – this showed me that the specialist nature of sourcing activity was where I wanted to go, and opened the door to my current permanent sourcing manager job.

Which of your skills and qualifications have you found most useful?

I have always been a confident communicator and negotiator, which has been useful in building relationships with suppliers, stakeholders and my team. A strong head for data and analysis is also vital for anybody in sourcing. As for credentials, my MCIPS qualification has helped open doors but it is my experience that gets the job done.

What advice would you offer someone seeking a sourcing job?

Stay one step ahead of market trends, and never underestimate the importance of good supplier relationships. Finally, be flexible and don't rule out an interim position if the circumstances are right, as you will pick up invaluable experience and contacts for the future.
